Ok, I got the scoop on this from a friend. Apparently, some of the POP
vendors that EarthLink uses don't do the port 25 blocking. That's because
those companies do their own spamming and don't want their own emails
blocked.

So, the reason it works for me to send mail through smtp.mac.com, but won't
work for someone else is the connection. I'm not sure why DSL would work for
some and not for others (since they don't go through a POP) but it's
probably some similar difference.

This is a really bad thing, especially for people that buy a new mac, sign
up for EarthLink using Apple's setup assistant and then have setup assistant
configure their machine to use smtp.mac.com only for them to come to find
out that might not work (depending on the POP they happen to use). I'm sure
this is generating a lot of tech support calls for EarthLink.
