I guess I have to believe you, but Earthlink tech support says otherwise. In
an interactive session today, I got this reply:

After reading your message, Dave, I once again went into my setup for my
mac.com account. I changed the outgoing mail server to "smtp.earthlink.net".
I checked the "Authentication required" box. I then tried it both with using
the username and password for incoming mail, and with a separate setting
using my iTools/mac.com account name and password. In both cases, the
connection fails.

Either you are imagining things (which I doubt, since you seem to know
exactly what you are doing), or Earthlink tech support is imagining things,
or else they have things set up differently on different servers. I cannot
think of an other explanation. As far as I can see I have tried every
possible combination of things, and IT JUST DON'T WORK!
