Even when I have a mac.com account, if I set the outbound mail server to mac.com the outgoing mail stalls; if I set it to earthlink, it works. Turning on authentication does not help with using the smtp.mac.com server; it won't work at all if I am connected via Earthlink. Some folks say that for them, it does, even dialing in through Earthlink. No one has successfully explained the difference; we've just confirmed that it is inconsistent. Earthlink's policy, as stated in an interactive tech support session just today: Stephen W: If you are dialing into us, you'll need to use mail.earthlink.net [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Okay, I suspected that was the case. So apparently the people who <think > they are dialing into Earthlink and sending via mac.com are imagining it?
