At the risk of adding to the confusion, here's my experience:

I have a mac.com account that I almost never use. I find it to be true that
I cannot send any mail using that account. I just did a test while
connected to the Internet using my cable access. The Progress window shows
the outbound test message is stalled, going nowhere. Changing the outbound
sending options in the account dialog makes no difference. If there is a
port other than 25, I don't know what it is.

My mail typically is sent through my company mail server where I have an
account and am therefore permitted to send mail. I can receive the mac.com
mail but I've given up on sending any thru mac.com. And I'm lost in the
thread about how to set it right.

I got my Earthlink account for a different reason. I was using Omnisky with
my Palm V to send and receive wireless mail. It picked up and sent mail
through my regular mail server, and could also handle 5 additional POP3
accounts. The mail software is made by JP Systems, sometimes they call it
OneTouch. I then switched to a Handspring VisorPhone so I could drop the
$40/month Omnisky account and dial up through the same Compuserve account I
have used for travel since 1986. It did not work. Something about the
Compuserve network refuses to handle the data packets coming through the
cellular network. But, I was told, Earthlink works.

So I switched my travel ISP from Compuserve to Earthlink. Now, when I am
using the Handspring Visorphone I can send and receive mail. Also, when
using my laptop and Entourage I can send and receive mail. However, the
outbound mail server MUST BE Earthlink. I cannot send any mail through my
own mail server while connected to Earthlink.

I am not sure if this contributes to the thread or not, but I would be glad
to learn what's really going on so I could either change the settings to
have things work as desired, or drop it and tolerate the limitations of both
Entourage and Earthlink.
