Well, if there are indeed install-related problems, the fact that Apple has
drastically changed the underlying permissions model for software
installations since Office v.X was originally released might have a little
to do with it.

Given that Office v.X is probably just about the most complex third party
installer in common use, problems with 10.2 wouldn't be entirely unexpected.

Personally, I'm not entirely convinced that the installation itself is
actually corrupted.

Re-installing may be inadvertently resolving problems.  For example, perhaps
during the first "post install" run, E'rage does extra error checking that
repairs minor database problems.
