This seems to be a controversial topic. I work at the University of Washington (in Seattle), and our campus email system is based on IMAP. In fact, the computing department here has been involved in the consortium developing IMAP, and UW-IMAP is one of the more popular server implementations. For OS X users, the university computing staff officially supports Apple's Mail program. They do not support Entourage (neither the OS 9 or OS X versions) and some individuals in the support group specifically recommend against using it. They cited internal studies which allegedly show that Entourage does not properly comply with IMAP standards. They also cited frequent reports from users of "database corruption", although it was not clear to me whether they were referring to problems with the server-side or client-side databases. I asked for advice on this list, and got some responses from people who believe that the problems lie with the UW-IMAP implementation. I have no idea who is right. I have also received conflicting recommendations about how to set Entourage IMAP account options. Bottom line is that I am still using Entourage with the UW-IMAP system. Most of the time it works fine. But I occasionally see instances where my local (client) database gets out of synch with the server. Headers remain displayed in the brower pane, when the messages are no longer on the server. Usually this happens to messages in the Drafts folder. An "advanced" rebuild removes the bogus headers, but that erases my links, and I have to reset my browser window column preferences, etc. Perhaps this is an example of the database corruption issue that the support group warned me about. For what it's worth, here is how I have my IMAP account preferences set. In the "Edit Account" window, "Options" tab, I have all checkboxes deselected. In the "Advanced" tab, I selected the option to "Purge deleted messages when quitting...". Sent messages are saved in the "Sent Items" IMAP folder. Draft messages are saved in the "Drafts" IMAP folder. I still do not know if these are the correct settings for UW-IMAP, and I certainly don't know if they are appropriate for other IMAP systems. -- Julian Vrieslander <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- To unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> archives: <http://www.mail-archive.com/entourage-talk%40lists.letterrip.com/> old-archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/entourage-talk%40lists.boingo.com/>
