Julian, you are joking, aren't you? Canon EF lenses, with some 
exceptions in high quality L lenses, aren't really well centered. This 
has been shown in dozens of lens tests of EF lenses.

Whether a split image focusing aid blacks out or not has to be a matter 
of it's optical design. There are several different screens with split 
image for the EOS 1N. One of them is secified not to black out with slow 
lenses, the others aren't. So I guess those DO black out with slow 
lenses.
