My magic lantern book about the 1N lists the screen Ec-B as a split
image which does not black out. There is also the Ec-L which is
described as a cross split image screen, but there is nothing said about
it blacking out or not, so I guess it does. This seems to be the
equivalent of an AF cross sensor.

Now, if the ability not to black out came at no compromises, I think
all newly designed screens would be like that. The only compromise I can
think of would be accuracy... But this is all guesswork until an actual
user cares to comment on it. Personally, I use the Ec-D screen (grid
screen). I would love to have a screen with grid lines *and* a split
image focusing aid, but fore some unknown reason there is no such thing
that I know of.

Sounds reasonable but I don't know for sure. This would support my
suspicion that the ones that don't black out are less accurate.
