I just read up on that technique and tried it out.
Basically, it works. It seems this technique has
several big drawbacks, though. First, for me it turned
out to be impossible to use that technique without a
tripod wheras a split screen can be easily used
without a tripod. Maybe these days with AF people who
use with split screens do all use tripods but I
consider it as a drawback anyways.
Second the object moves only little even if it is
considerable out of focus. For critical focus the
movement becomes too small for me to be of much help.
I could get better focus without any help then with
that technique.
Maybe all this is just because I am not familiar with
that technique but it seems to me that it is only
really suitable for point-like objects for which it
probably is much harder to judge good focus.
