I don't think that shorting both wires in the closed position will do any
harm, but I would not join the wires in the open position. I think that it
will work, but I don't think it is safe enough considering the price of the
cameras.

But it will not be difficult to develop a way to fire both cameras at the
same time.

It's trivial depending of your electrical understanding.

I think I can do that, at least in my EOS 500n (Rebel G). Don't know for
sure in cameras over the Elans.
