Hi Scott,

The issue of lens compatibility and potential chip
upgrades would lead me say that (IMO) a good choice
would be the A2 with another potential (unmentioned)
choice. My reasoning for this is as follows:

Original Elan: AF speed is no better but the frame
rate is better but not outstanding (3fps). It has
only one central (cross) AF point, no e-ttl flash, but
has great ergonomics, rear Quick Control Dial (QCD)
and very quiet operation. If your lenses are
compatible with the Rebel 2000, they would definitely
be compatible with the Elan.

Elan 7: Definitely faster AF speed and has a 4fps
frame rate. 7 AF points, e-ttl flash, rear QCD,
Mirror Lock Up (MLU), also with great ergonomics and
quiet operation. Also more expensive (but depending on
whether you intend to keep or sell your 2000, that may
not be such an issue). The problem here is lens
compatibility - you'll need to check with the Tokina
Distributor (THK in the states:
http://www.thkphoto.com/). Sigma lens compatibility
can be found at:
http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/news/Elan7.htm

I'd go for the Elan 7 IF the price is within range and
IF you can confirm that your lenses are compatible or
can be upgraded (preferably for free!).

A2: Faster AF speed than the 2000 and up to 5fps, but
about the same fps as the Elan 7 in predictive mode
(3.5fps I think). Has 5 AF points, spot metering, rear
QCD, MLU and ergonomics are very similar to the Elan
with very Quiet operation. Has no e-ttl flash but
would be compatible with all your existing lenses.
Between this and the Elan, the A2 has all the
advantages, but two. Price and the command dial. Just
how widespread the command dial problem is has never
truly been demonstrated/proven. A permanent fix though
is available from Horizon Electronics for around $120.
This adds to the price point if it's needed, but it is
a great camera.

The other one to consider is the Elan II. AF is not as
quick as the A2 or Elan 7, but is I understand faster
than the 2000. Frame rate is a bit better at 2.5fps,
has 3 AF points, rear QCD, MLU, e-ttl, is fairly quiet
and has almost identical ergonomics to the Elan 7. As
it was released prior to the 2000, it should also be
compatible with the Sigma and Tokina lenses. Pricing
is somewhere between the Elan and the A2.

Of course, only you can make the final evaluation and
decide what is best for you. Having said that it's
nearly ALWAYS a difficult choice.

Regards
Gary
