Actually no, I wouldn't. But now, it's the other way round. I actually
have an original Elan, not an Elan II. And I never even thought about
replacing it with an Elan II. Not because I'd think the original Elan is
superior on an absolute scale. But because it is equal at the very least
for MY needs and cheaper as well. And this still holds for the Elan 7,
which would be a (for me) slight improvement for my main needs, a vaste
improvement in AF speed and AF handling with its extra sensors but at a
relatively steep price.

My needs for this camera are quietness, full control over the metering
modes and AF and drive modes, not so much AF speed. When I need speed,
my 1N will deliver it. I think your estimate for a used original Elan is
about right (bought at a store, including at least some months of
warranty). A new Elan 7 is around $600 here in Germany (mailorder). It
might well be cheaper elsewhere, of course. Anyway, if money is a big
concern, it makes quite a difference.

Nevertheless, my needs are obviously quite different from Scotts', who
will use the camera as his first and only one, not as a backup body or
for special events. And the original Elans AF is certainly no good for
birds in flight. I use mine in one-shot AF mode 95+ percent of the time.
In all fairness, birds in flight in front of a not too distant
background are still a major challenge even for an 1V or Nikon F5.
