Some possibilities:
Weak batteries, or dirty battery contacts.
Dirty contacts on the back of the lens or inside the
lens mount.
Lens not mounted correctly (not turned until it
locks).
Defective body, or defective lens. (If you have more
than one lens, does it only happen with one lens, or
all of them). Try to borrow another lens or body
(even pay a visit to a camera store and ask to try a
lens), and see what happens.
