That's exactly what I DO use most of the time, or "Auto" mode on my
non-TTL cameras, so I suppose that's OT. I have a Sunpak 433D and a
Sunpak 555 potato masher, as well as a 420EX. The lack of manual
override on the 420 EX relegates it to second line duty most of the
time, although I'm familiar with what situations it will work well
in. I don't even have a 550EX, but eventually will, for precisely
those manual overrides. I just got and am awaiting delivery of the
dedicated EOS module for the 555, which is a very capable and powerful
flash, so I 'm eager to see how it works on my EOS. Works great on my
FD cameras.

My experience with the 420EX is that I DO get "somewhat consistent
exposures." It seemed this discussion was more about getting really
good exposures, in which case I would say yes, it is too much to
expect on auto. Are you all really not getting "somewhat consistent
exposures" with your EX flashes?

Well there you go - *once you understand.*

but for the digital it just didn't work, and i am

If this discussion was about the E-TTL on digital cameras, I am out
talking of class, I have no experience therewith. I thought it was
more general.

Did I say that? I just thought I said you need to know how to use
your equipment, and you can't expect it to "take the picture" for you.
