Having recently moved to all digital, I've found that the built-in flash on
my D30 is not enough in lots of circumstances. Most of my shooting is done
with models, indoors, using studio flash equipment - no problems
there. But more and more, I find myself being asked to shoot social events
that are poorly lit, fast movement, etc. This is where the problem
arises. I can't use my studio lights for perfect control. And my
customers do not want "studio shots" anyway.
So what I need is a recommendation from the group. I am going to get a
Canon flash. But I'm stuck between the 420EX and the 550EX. Most of my
"problem" arises when I look at the price tags. Can I expect double the
performance with the 550EX - it costs twice as much as the 420EX. My D30
owners manual recommends (only) the 550EX for best results. What
differences are there that I should consider? Besides price that is.
I am loath to spend a lot of money on a 550EX if the 420EX would
suffice. As most of you probably know, the 550EX runs about $300 or so and
the 420EX runs about $165. Big difference.
Any thoughts would be welcomed.
