This is not really a fair assessment and is very subjective. I own and use both flashes and regularly use the extra distance of the 550EX. Another feature of the 550EX I like and use is the ability to plug in an external flash booster pack to reduce recycle time, which is an option the 420EX does not offer. There are other functions offered by the 550EX and not the 420EX but I suggest you read the spec sheets and work out what you use for your style of shooting. I could recommend either and use them both with Stofen Omnibounce covers. If you don't really need the extra features of the 550 then I agree with the above post as there is a big difference in size and weight.
