Id go with what you just said ,I have the 54MZ-3 and it gives some
really strange combinations if used in Tv or Av modes
I spoke to Lutz Goeschel at metz today and the best advice he could give
me was buy a Nikon(bah spit!!!great support)
apparently metz e-ttl is the same as Canon but the eos range tend to go
for a lower speeds than the nikon.Canon explained this as don't use any
e-ttl flash
In those modes unless your looking for that effect of the subject being
in focus and a real blurry mish mash in the background and the
forground(which can be nice if desired)Or in program mode when all
you`ll get will be f4 at 60sec 90% of the time. But using the flash with
the camera in manual mode and the flash in E-ttl end youll get the right
result. If I have got this wrong I would love someone to put me right
because I have been tearing my hair out since April when I purchased
it.I was so dispondent I was on the point of trading it for a 550ex
(having had the 540)but luckily I had the chance to put one on my EOS 3
just discover it performed exactly as the metz 54mz-3.Canon flashes are
good but I don't like the colour or the lack of colour much to white
where as the metz is nice and warm and shedloads cheaper (306eur/$
aginst 435eur/$) and as for build quality metz have that pretty well
sorted as well. But please if anyone is using this combo of EOS3 and Metz
54MZ-3 I`d love to hear your thoughts on this.Oh and DSLR users beware
if you do purchase this flash check which revision of foot that is
supplied as there are still some floating around with the older foot
(current revision is 3102 M2) but there is a newer underway as I write
this

I beg to differ. DSLRs can't meter flash off the film
(OTF), so they use E-TTL, which in it's current
incarnation is more a lottery rather than a tried and
tested technique.

So my approach is to use a flash with a cell of its own
and use that in aperture mode with the camera in manual
mode. Whatever corrections need to be done can easily
be foreseen with a little experience and countermeasures
can be taken prior to the shot. High reliability.

The flash I am using is either the Metz 36CT3 on grip G15
or the Metz 45CT3. If I were to buy a brand new, current
model flash today, it would be the Metz 54MZ3.

This would even give you E-TTL, if you bothered to.
