Thanks for all the comments on my earlier posting. I am sure the answer is not just to do with differing taxes in different countries, as can be seen by comparing British and European prices. And I'm sure the retailers over here in the UK would vigorously defend their profit margins compared with those enjoyed by others.
But at least one UK retailer has taken up the challenge to prevent UK sales all disappearing overseas! Park Cameras (at www.parkcameras.com) are offering the EOS 300D body for 750 pounds (instead of Canon UK's 900 pounds), and the EOS 300D + 18/55 lens for 830 pounds (instead of Canon UK's 1000 pounds). That is close enough to USA pricing for me as it cuts out the import duties and postage delays and I've placed my deposit!
