I had all three different models (D30, D60, 10D) at
one point. The D30 AF was so painful, that even
the "improved" D60 AF wasn't really good either.
A common complaint of D30/D60 users was the poor
AF performance, especially in low light.

Considering that these bodies originally sold for
$3000 and $2200 respectively, a better AF
performance would be expected. As it is, it
compared to that of (or even worse than) a Rebel.

My main application was studio and macro, and for
that the cameras worked ok. I also tried it for
taking photographs of my baby boy, and indoors
with regular room lighting, AF was painfully slow
and I low quite a few shots because of that.

I like the 10D better in that respect. AF is now
at least par with the Elan (which is still not
stellar as far as I'm concerned). The 10D has the
AF that the D30 should have had at first place.

BTW, the D30 needs all the help it can get for
its poor AF, so your fast lenses would help a
bit.

With a 10D, the noise at 400 ASA is much less
pronounced than on a D60 - some folks say 800 ASA
on the 10D looks better than 400 ASA on the D60.

I guess I would have stayed with the D60, but
I wanted the FAT32 support for using the 4Gig
Microdrive. I didn't like being limited to the
equivalent of 4 1/2 rolls of film on a 1 Gig
Microdrive. Some days I would come really
close to filling both my 1 Gig Microdrives.
Only way to avoid it was to switch to JPG for
not so important photographs (ie. those for
the web).
