If they can come out with a full frame DSLR that is along the build lines
of the EOS 3 and EOS 1 series film cameras that is priced at $2500 or less,
they will find a huge market.

I agree. Maybe not "huge" but there is certainly a market for a camera like
that.

Whether or not it has 8, 12, or 16 MPs is
less important as I believe you can generate great print at up to 13X19
inch size (from my experience) with anything greater that 5 MPs.

True. Still I have trouble finding a reason to buy an 8 MP 1D mkII if a DSLR
with the 3's specs is available for $1500 less and has more pixels.

Why do I want full frame? It's what I'm used to and it keeps my lens
collection consistent with my film experiences and practices. After all,
haven't many of us purchased lens collections and camera bags for different
occasions? We don't want to have to rebuild or buy a whole new setup.
Also, controlling depth of field is important to me, and with smaller
CCD/CMOS sensors, getting shallow depth of fields at normal to wide angle
lenses is difficult.

I'm with you here! 1.6x sensors have too much DOP.
I'm about to buy a 20D or 350D. A Canon 10-22mm would be perfect to fill my
wide angle needs but spending 800 Euros on a lens that will only work on
1.6x sensors doesn't seem reasonable. What if Canon drops the 1.6 crop
factor in the future? 10-22mm owners will be left with a quite expensive
paperweight. I wish Canon told its customers which crop factors they wish to
maintain. I'm pretty sure that a camera line up with 3 different crop
factors will no last long. At least 1 will disappear in the future.

I'm happy with my 20D, but would really like a full
frame sensor at a reasonable price (is $2500 reasonable???)

Yes, if you consider the price or full-frame sensor cameras. However I believe it is still too expensive for most amateurs. I know it is for me.

Everybody's talking in terms of a downgraded 1 series camera, why not an upgraded 20D? An Elan 7 frame with the outgoing 1Ds' 11mp sensor, 2.5-4 fps, ETTL-2, Digic 2, built in flash, the same CFs as the 20D, no spot meter for, say, around $3000. There's enough difference in function not to pirate sales from the 1D mkII, and a high enough price to protect the 20D, especially if the 20D drops a couple of hundred during its life span, but it would undercut the price of the Nikon D2x and the Kodak DCS Pro/c
