A digital version of the EOS 3 is long awaited by Canon users. There is
certainly a huge price gap between the 20D and the 1D MkII. However,
technically speaking, I can't see what Canon come up with. If they
stick to an 8 MP sensor, it will be yet another 8MP DSLR camera in their
line up and it will have a hard time competing with the 20D if the price
is too high. If the price is too close to the 20D it may eventually kill
20D sales.
If they go for a 10 MP or more sensor it will endanger 1D MkII sales.
The solution could be introducing a digital version of the EOS 3 and
replacing the 20D at the same time (which is going to have a hard time
competing with the 350D, I guess).

I'd be delighted with a body anywhere in size from the
20D to a 1v that offers 45 point AF and the
performance of the 1D MkII AF system. The 20D is a
marked improvement over the 10D AF, but for sports is
still behind my 1v. I have no issues with the 1.6x
sensor, but I think for this to make economic sense
any such "tweener" body would probably have the 1.3x
sensor from the 1D MkII.

Fact is, though, I really don't expect to see it. Last
year there was an interview with a Japanese Canon exec
posted on the web, and that person seemed pretty
emphatic that Canon had no plans to make a "baby 1D"
series camera. He emphasized Canon was quite content
with the 3 levels of DSLR they currently support:
entry (300, 350), med (10D, 20D) and pro (1D MkII, 1DsMkII).

Canon has also said that the two 1D models will eventually merge into a single model, perhaps next time around. This would leave a big gap between a 1DS and a 20D. I read on another list that the 1D sensors would not work on a 1.6X chip, because they were spread over too large an area. I believe that it was a question asked of a Canon rep at PMA I cannot remember if it was the focussing sensors or the exposure sensors, or both. The 1D Mk II focussing is certainly far better than the 350D and 20D.

Cheers
