Great feedback, Tom, thanks. I have to confess I didn't even think about the flash aspect. It's not much of an issue in the field, but I do shoot with flash in other contexts, of course. And I've certainly grown accustomed to and perhaps even a bit dependent on E-TTL, both on the Elan and on my G2. So yes it would be best to stick with that.

Interesting comment about stepping back to the 20D. It confirms some funny doubts I have, partly from reading specs and partly from handling one in a store. My main camera now is a pair of T-90s, which is really almost a manual focus EOS-1, so I think I know what you mean.

Thanks again,
Ken

Ken, just my opinion, worth no more than any, less than most.

I loved my 1n dearly, it was my first pro model Canon and it was (an is) a
fantastic camera. But if you already have an Elan 7 and you're contemplating
a digital body, I'd suggest you look at an EOS 3 instead. Virtually every
feature of the 1n, although slightly less tank-like, plus newer AF and more
importantly, ETTL like your Elan and whatever digital body you end up with.
While you may not use a lot of flash with your long lenses (or maybe you own
a couple of better beamers already), wouldn't it be simpler to have a single
flash system to deal with?

And just a warning, once you own either the 1 or 3 series, the Canon 20D
will seem like a step back in many respects. I use both my 20Ds a great
deal, but I'd like to be able to afford something with spot metering and a
real viewfinder. So you may end up saving for the 5D or a used 1dMkII after
your upcoming film body purchase.
