What you need is a big speech to deliver to people who ask that about the symbolic and social importance of wedding photographs. If that still doesn't convince them, then get in contact with the bride's mother and give her the same speech. Having the names and numbers of professional wedding photographers, especially the less expensive ones on hand, will always help your case.
The big deal in wedding photography isn't the lens. There is a lot of ritual, and a lot of people herding. You have to able to control and direct dozens of people and do it quickly. Sometime between when people get dressed up and when they start getting drunk you have to take a lot of formal pictures. The people you have to herd up don't want to be there and will be trying to escape. It is an absolute nightmare. If you miss an important shot, then it is gone. There are huge lists of the "traditional" photographs that people expect. And expectations are your enemy. Weddings are important, and people put a lot of value on them. And they put a lot of value on the photographic proof that it happened. As far as access to the altar goes, however, if you are the wedding photographer, you can stand whereever you want. Really though, I always suggest that people get a real wedding photographer to make sure all the expected and traditional things go right. If they want their friends to take pictures too, then that is fine, I just never want the pressure of having to do the official photographs. There is a reason that people make their livelihoods off such photography.
