P.Fn 21 "Enables quiet operation when the shutter button is OFF after shooting", page 157 of the 1D Mk 2 Instruction Manual. The Personal Functions can only be modified through the EOS Viewer software provided with the camera, i.e. cannot be set directly on the camera, I had to buy a PCMCIA Firewire card for my laptop in order to communicate to the camera in order to set it, it was a pain. This particular function on works only during single frame advance mode, the mirror comes up and shutter opens and closes to take the shot when you press down the shutter release, but the mirror won't come down until you release the shutter release, so if you are in a quiet environment such as church session, or a briefing then you can press the shutter release to take the shot but don't release the shutter until you lower the camera out of the way or under your coat or something, works quite well for me so I have it set at all times.
