Bob, I really think your issue with the Giottos might be sample quality. I
have the same head that I use on a pair of 3021 legs, and I've been very
pleased with it, although my largest lens is the 100-400. I didn't have it
when I still had the 300 2.8, but my gut feeling is that it would be ok with
that as well. I liked mine so much that a local friend of mine bought one as
well, which was much poorer than mine, especially the small tension
adjustment. He ended up trading it back to Ramsey for a Gitzo (1376?).
