Bob, I really think your issue with the Giottos might be sample quality. I
have the same head that I use on a pair of 3021 legs, and I've been very
pleased with it, although my largest lens is the 100-400. I didn't have it
when I still had the 300 2.8, but my gut feeling is that it would be ok with
that as well. I liked mine so much that a local friend of mine bought one as
well, which was much poorer than mine, especially the small tension
adjustment. He ended up trading it back to Ramsey for a Gitzo (1376?).

Tom,
You may be right. I bought the Giottos based on cost, usage, and input from some people that used it, not necessarily in that order.

At first it was OK but after some months, I don't use it often, it started slipping with my 28-70 on it. Then after some more time there was oily and greasy stuff oozing out. I have tried to clean it with various solvents and the ooze is gone but it just won't hold my 70-200 or 300......

Ever since I first got it, when I put it away, I removed all tension from the ball and put it away loose.

I have a son that is a mechanical engineer and a son-in-law that has a machine shop and I'm tempted to give it to them and let them tear into it.....
