My old EOS 650 died on me. I am not ready to take the leap for a 5D but
unwilling to "settle" for a 30D. Instead, I bought a nice used 1N for a
very good price, hoping to get me through a few more years before Canon
FF DSLR price is more affordable. I would really like to match it with a
vertical grip, but there seem two grips (power boosters) 1N can use:
PB-E1 and PB-E2. I understand that PB-E2 is the current one so probably
has 1V equivalent weather seal. Other than that, what is the difference
between the two? Does PB-E1 have the main dial, AF selection and AEL
buttons? Can PB-E1 use, say, supermarket brands rechargeable AA
batteries?

The other question relates to flash. I am tempted to buy a used 540EZ as
well to replace the old Vivitar ATTL unit I still have. But I still want
to move to DSLR one of those days so I plan to buy something that is
compatible. However, looking through Canon web site, it seems that all
new Canon DSLR are compatible with ETTL-2 only, there is no mention of
ETTL, ATTL or plain TTL. Is it true that these DSLR are imcompatible
with, say, ATTL? Why can't DSLR maintain backward compatibility with
older TTL modes?

Thank you very much for your help.

Francis
