I've got a 19" ViewSonic and it is the best monitor I've seen in a long time. When I get a replacement for home I'll be getting their 22" widescreen.
As for size you can go as large as you want but with LCDs you aren't going to get a lot more resolution. Standard for 19"-22" is 1280x1024. Widescreen 19"-22" will give you something like 1440x1050. Those are all in the $300-$400 range. The HP that Javier recommends gives you 1900x1200. That's about 20% extra viewing space but it's twice the price. If you've got the extra money then go for it.
