I noticed the same problem a long time ago, before I had an LCD. I would make a new document in PhotoShop that was 1" x 1" and then bring up the CRT's controls to shrink/expand the screen until both dimensions of the box were equal. I wound up with 1/2" - 3/4" extra black space on both left & right side but everything was proportional. Never thought about another resolution.
Mike -----Original Message----- This de facto standard bit me on the $%*! a while back. I had a 21" monitor in the office and a 17" in the studio, both CRTs. The 21" at 1600 x1200 and the 17" at 1024 x 768, "de facto" standards. The 17" was swapped for a 19" at 1280 x 1024. A model that I'd worked with, many times, said, I'd made her look fat! I was dismissive at the time and got on with the job. Later when looking at the pics on the office 21" her "fatness" was gone! It took me a while to realise that 1280 x 1024 is 5:4 not 4:3 the format of the screens. I now run the 19" monitor at 1280 x 960 and my models love me, again!
