Bob,
An interesting thread, and I've been lurking my way through it from the
beginning. The only way
I've found to keep track of the actual shutter clicks is to keep a written log
somewhere, and who
has the time or the presence of mind when you're in the "heat of battle" to do
that. I am known in
my circle of photog acquaintances for taking a huge number of shots when I'm in
the field. I went
to Yellowstone for a week of winter photography (pre-digital) and was in the
field for five days.
I came home with 42 rolls of film, which was pretty normal for me. Everyone
else on that trip had
less than half that....
I gave up trying to count the clicks when I upgraded to the 1Ds... it rolls
over at 9,999 anyway,
and then you lose track.
An intriguing thing to think about, but why should we bother doing this? To
show the age of the
shutter mechanism? Or just as a curiosity.
Congratulations on finding that piece of heaven called "retirement". Wish I
could say the same.

Jane,
The local Costco almost closed their photo department when I went
digital....... ;-)
Now when I come home from somewhere that I've been shooting I find it
more cost effective to send the ,jpg to them and pick them up later.
I was just curious and when I saw someone else ask about it I wondered
if the IMG_nnnn was worth anything as far as the shutter count. I think
I got an answer, no, and I learned some things about my 20D so it was
worth it.
Thanks for the congrats. After 40 years I decided that I had enough of
the daily IBM grind and put my tool bag on athe hook and turned in my
Blackberry and laptop. Now I hope to relearn all that I forgot about
photography while working the hectic life of an IBM Field service guy
and helping my wife raise our four kids. And maybe even lear more that
I ever knew before, like Photoshop.....
The retirement was great at first but now that winter has finally come
to Northeastern Ohio I'm getting cabin fever.
To paraphrase and old song., "Your day will come.... :-) "
