For the 1 series, there is a utility from Canon (cancount) that will tell
you the number of shutter actuations.

Besides rolling the counter over, you can reset the image number
unintentionally by using a card from another camera (it will start using
that number) or by simply resetting the counter in the menu or even by
telling the camera to start renumbering every time you format the card.

Tom,

After reading this thread and doing some digging I have comments about the image numbering when changing CF cards.

Here is what I find and think I understand. There is a Lithium CR2016 in the 20D that helps keep, among other things, the number of the last image shot. This number is stored somewhere in the camera's logic. (Logic is a long time term for the circuitry) When a CF card is installed and everything is ready to take the picture, the firmware reads the number on the CF card and compares it with the stored number. If the CF card has a lower number the stored number is used. If the CF card has a higher number, that number is used. In either case the number is written to the CF card along with the image and the number in the camera is increased. This is why when you put a freshly formatted, or a brand new, CF card in the 20D the image numbering doesn't get lost. I think the only difference between a freshly formatted card and one from another camera that has a number on it that is not in the sequence is that you'll have a messed up numbering scheme with the way out of sequence card.

All this makes me think that the answer to my original question, is the IMG_nnnn a reliable indicator of total shutter activations, is no, not really. It doesn't take into consideration the number of shots with no CF card if you choose to override the no card thing or the accidental CF card swap you mentioned. Then there is the ability to manually reset the count and the resulting "accounting" chore of remembering the number everytime. And it is possible to accidentally reset the counter to 0000.

This has been an interesting thread and I'm glad that I had time to dig since I'm finally retired and its too cold to run around outside.

Oh, and for those interested, the CR 2016 is located near the main battery under the battery cover.
