P.S. Each airframe has a "natural speed" at which it will move through
the
air with economical power. To go past this speed, the power curve gets
steep and a LOT more power and fuel consumption is needed for only a
little
gain.

I remember when a fellow butchered a Coupe to put a 135 hp engine on it
and
only got a bit more speed. He said it climbed like a banshee, though.

I **think** that the Ercoupe and Forney models with the older style
canopy,
hit the max of their "natural" speed around 108-112. The Alons, with
their
more aerodynamic canopy, seem to hit their "natural" speed limit closer to
115. I can't show numbers to justify these thoughts.

The result of this is that if you try to cruise your O-200 powered Ercoupe
faster than about 110, you'll suck down the fuel without much gain in
speed.
But you'll climb pretty well (though not quite like a banshee :) ).

Greg,
I agree with you that cruising up high can add range when there is a
strong wind. But for normal every day flying around, I dont find the O-200
to be very efficiant. I am hardpressed to get mine below 7.5 gal/hr. I
have
the marvel carb too.
