Regarding the cooling and the cowling gap:

It should be about 1" at the bottom and wider on the sides.
If you are having overheating problems, It may not be the gap.
It is possible that you have a 85 HP upgrade but without the required additional baffling around the oil tank.

Some coupes have cooling ducts that you can see below the cylinders between the push rod tubes. SOme don't.
Maybe yours doesn't but should.
I don't know what the book says about these ducts and the associated stainless sheets that surround the lower half of the cylinders, but if it was there, it probably should not be removed.

So you see, I have as many doubts as you have...
