I live in a cold climate (Sunriver, Oregon 4163'MSL) and enjoy winter flying in cold crisp air... makes even an 85 HP 'Coupe feel like a fighter jet! Preheating a C-85 has proven no problem with a relatively cheap "EZ-Heat" electric sump heater. I keep it plugged-in whenever I'm on the ground, and use an insulated cowl cover. The entire engine stays 'warm' to the touch (even the cylinder head covers), with oil temps at about 120. These gagets cost about $130, and use about 100W of power... almost every one on our field uses them. The model shaped like a 'Maltese Cross' is made to fit the globular shape of our oil tanks, make sure to install it in warm waether or indoors at 50-50 degrees. Happy flying.... open cockpit of course! Chuck Rosenfeld N87114, SN 287

While rebuilding my engine, I have made a point of getting every single
gasket that realgaskets makes for my C-75: oil filler cap, valve covers,
pushrod housings, oil tank. Also I got the four pushrods converted to
their spring loaded version.

Hey Bob: Yes, the 415-C wings are all the same. However, I have found that there are differences in every wing (small ones but differences) most likely due to repairs or hand build up. Are you willing to take metal covered ones, or
do you feel you must have fabric?
I may be able to help, where are you located?

Hello to all,
What does everyone think about preheating the engines in our coupes???
Winter is almost here in the northeast and my poor coupe is outside tied
down.

You all have a Great Thanksgiving Day. Cartoon attached is off topic.

Bill,
My coupe lives in an unheated hangar. As the temperature gets close to
freezing, I block off the air cooling the oil tank and preheat when the
ambient air is in the mid-twenties and below. I keep AeroShell 15-50 in
year round so I don't change to a winter oil.

crud... I was hoping you might be one of the few (Southern) New England
'Coupes... looked you up and you're in NJ (the Fed think)... I still
think our region deserves a fly-in - I agitated for one this past
summer, to no avail, obviously - how about '07???

To relate to your question, I'm chronically short of coin so don't have
preheat deals on my plane, my former home base would do 15' for -I
forget, maybe $20- but that really doesn't do it... what I've decided
in S'ern RI is to leave it sleep when it's below 20ยบ - I used to be a
fan of the AeroShell multi-weight, but got sucked into Exxon Elite
multi-weight (probably negligible difference, although I think the
Exxon is rated wider for weight and they claim it is better against
corrosion - God only knows, and that may be literal). If I HAD to go
and it was REALLY cold, I guess I'd buy at least 1/2 hour of preheating
- still, the poor thing will run cold anyway - not good - and I have a
cover for the hole under the prop for winter. My flying club (C-172)
kind of ignores the whole issue which I think is less than good.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Jim

If you can get electricity to it, then a system like a Tanis TAS75-01
works great. It fits all our engines (A-65 through O-200) and is safe
to leave plugged in for a whole week if needed.

At $400 or so, it is a bit of an investment. I have it on my engine and
will be plugging it into a Thermo Cube.

Warning: The below are just personal opinions and should be taken with a
grain of salt and a whole lot of additional research. Please correct me
if you have scientific research showing otherwise.

I personally would shy away from relying on oil dipstick heaters as they
only heat the sump oil which will just quickly cool and congeal as it
runs through the cold cylinders and heads... so not so much benefit
there. Remember, the primary goal is to minimize startup engine wear,
not just make the engine start easier.

Heated blowers are good if you are patient and don't try to heat the
engine quickly. There is a lot of metal there to warm up; give it time,
and try to warm it evenly. Some of those blowers generate a really high
heat. If you jam it all right up to the front cylinders, then you are
shock heating your engine and that's not so good (just like you don't
want to shock cool the engine on descent). It isn't as serious (as the
cylinder expands rather than contracts), but still... I can't see it
being good for it. Back in Minnesota, our training school heated their
engines with blowers (ones that didn't have a Tanis heater) for 30
minutes or more before starting the engine.
