"The new useful load would only be 350 lbs. Put full fuel in it and now
you only have 206 lbs left for the pilot, passenger and baggage."
But that's the case for almost all 415-Cs. If one can bring all 415-D,E,G
Models into the Sport Pilot definition by adding floats - why not?
I see a market already for extremely lightweight floats, that will put on
all these Coupes, even if there's no lake around in hundreds of miles..
Could floats be added per STC?? I'd like some for eventual Ocean
flights...

Kim, not only would there be all the difficulties that Ed listed below,
there is the useful load factor. If you took a 900 lb. empty weight 415-D
and put it on floats, it's new empty weight would be somewhere in the
vicinity of 1050 lbs., allowing 150 lbs. for the floats. The new useful
load would only be 350 lbs. Put full fuel in it and now you only have 206
lbs left for the pilot, passenger and baggage. Doesn't sound like a good
thing to me.

Kim,
I'm pretty sure you'd only be allowed the 1430 lb.
amphibious/water-operation LSA limit at times the plane was *capable* of
those operations. No floats, no extra weight allowance.
Similarly, if you go through the process of mounting floats and getting
their installation approved, I'd feel confident that you'd be allowed the
1430 lb. gross weight or the conversion did not allow a gross weight
higher than 1430 lb.
You'd have a really hard time convincing the FAA judge that you
*intended* water operations with just your wheels.
Unfortunately, the FAA testing of an Ercoupe modified for floats
resulted in a failed spin test, the FAA pilot bailing out and float
operation being denied, if I remember the details right.
So, unless the guy in Idaho who was going to try for float approval on
his Coupe was successful, there's no way to get permission to mount floats
on your Coupe. He mentioned this several years ago and I never heard any
follow-up.
As a side note, rudder action was required to do float operation
(though that could be managed with a hand control, if you could overcome
the other obstacles).

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Elevator Skin Cracks
Our beloved Harry (N93929) is grounded right now; both the upper and lower
skins on the elevator have begun cracking. The suspicious part, to me, is
that it is all on the left side.
Right now my chief suspects are the trim tab (opposite side) and the
possibility of the elevator cables not being quite as tight as they should
be. Has anyone had a similar problem or any ideas about why cracks would
suddenly appear on one side? I say suddenly because 5 cracks, 2 on top
and
3 on bottom, ranging from ½” to 2 ½ “ appeared in less than 10 hours
operation.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] STC for side cockpit door
Thanks to this group (Glen Putnam and others) I have tracked down the
STC from the FAA issued in 1972 for modifying the Ercoupe with a
"drop down" gull wing door that provides wheelchair storage and
tremendously improved access to the cockpit. I have the drawings,
spec's, etc. I definitely want to do this. As it requires some
airframe fabrication, etc, it needs a good A&P shop. Does anyone
have suggestions for where in Northern CA I could go to get this work
done??
I may wait on installing the bigger door/wheelchair storage until I'm
sure I can fly (and want to continue to do so, as I'm a new pilot)
before I tear up the airframe, but I want to find out who could do
this and at what price.

Tommy, where are the cracks? Do they follow any rivet lines, or are
they random? I've never heard of the elevator skin just cracking like
that.

Sure is strange. Sounds like a rib/stringer that may have been stressed
for years has final given in and thus broken. Loose cables causing some
flutter could be the problem, maybe the elevator being out of balance due
to some outside difficulties, too. How about a pic or two? Keep us
posted as to the progress. Maybe someone has an elevator hanging around
if yours is too far gone.

Subject: [COUPERS-TECH] Re: [COUPERS-FLYIN] STC for side cockpit door
Good evening Kim:
I wish that you could have met my good friend Jack Compere that owned
and flew 3047H, the yellow coupe on the U.S. Post Office stamp, for many
years. He had polio as a young man and was in a wheel chair.
Jack's coupe was not modified other than having the large baggage
compartment. He carried a small stool that he used to get himself up off
the
wing so he could lift his legs into the cockpit and then slide down onto
the
seat. He would dismantle his chair before he slid himself all the way up
on
the wing and stow it in the luggage compartment.
Another friend has Jacks take apart chair. So maybe if you wanted to
give it a try I could ask. I think you should try this before you start
cutting into your coupe.
Glad you made it all OK on Saturday: Maynard Smith, 99843, Colfax, CA.
