Good Morning Dan;
I may have misstated my opinion and for that I apologize. I am in favor of
allowing our Ercoupes to be returned to a prior designation in order to fit
into LSA, but I'm really not in favor of increasing the LSA Max weight any
more than it is. I think that may be the cracking on the top of Pandora's
box. But, it would solve the problem easier.
The main reason (IMHO) anyone converted to the D model was that they could
legally fly with more weight in the airplane. Since it was a paper
conversion, outside of the elevator travel, it didn't mean Jack Schidt. In
other words the paper didn't alter what the aircraft could do. There were
some good reasons, like the fuel tank STC that may needed to be installed on
a D, but as far as helping you and your copilot to get your rear ends off
the ground, it didn't happen. Other than the elevator travel there is no
difference between the CD and D.
For those out there that can't seem to find a good C or CD, you just have to
wait it out. They're out there and one that I would have great interest in
is on the swap page right now. Although a Taylorcraft is a fine airplane, I
will wait until the right Miss Ercoupe comes along.

I agree with AJ. The D (and the many converted C and CD models) coupes
would be great LSA ships. If we who have benefited from the LSA rules
to allow us to fly real airplanes again are responsible and prove that we
can safely self certify, I believe we can sucesuffly lobby for the small
rule changes to improve the regulations . After all, I can legally fly a
complex motor glider with feathering propeller, retractable engine and
landing gear, spoilers, flaps and water ballest (if I could afford one).
I couldn't find a good, affordable C coupe when I was in the market, and
am now flying a 1940 Taylorcraft. No electical system, less visibility,
slower, and harder to land and handle on the ground than a coupe -- but
it is a fun airplane and at least I'm flying again.
Eighty more pounds in the gross weight limit would allow many more
aircraft to be LSA qualified, and would make the newer ships better
aircraft. Lets continue supporting AOPA, EAA, the type clubs and lobby
for that to happen.

Jerry;
I used to think exactly as you do and recently changed my outlook. When
you realize that the process was political and the D Coupe is a victim of
the fallout, you may change your mind just as I did. The LSA is too
ingrained right now to be taken away, only improved. Think positive and
toward the future!

John, et al:
I have to respectfully disagree with Lorraine Morris (whom I've met) and
the
C-120/140 folks.
Sport pilot is such a revolutionary idea - think of it, actually getting
to
fly real airplanes without a medical!! Ten or twenty years ago, it
would
have been unthinkable.
I don't want to see people rocking the boat with off the wall petitions
for
exemptions, calling congressmen, etc. All it will take it for a small
group
of uninformed congressmen saying, "What, we've got pilots out there who
have
had heart surgery, (or whatever) now flying airplanes without FAA
physical
exams!! Let's stop that".
Then, the whole thing could go up like a poof ball.
For one, I'm thankful for what I've got now, as it's a whole world more
than
we had 3 years ago.
