Hey Jeff: I believe that you may be wrong about the C-85 in a "C" model. I  
have not researched it myself, but Ed's article about Ercoupe's states  
"conversion to 85 hp engines. For model C, see A-718, section Engines and 
Engine  
Accessories, paragraph 110."
    I would check that paragraph, and use that with  your FAA specialist to 
ensure you get your approval for the C-85. 
    There are even a few C models with the 90 HP  engine, and my 
understanding is if you provide a 337 approved prior to 1956,  that is the 
engineering 
data required for the change.
