There was an article in New Scientist a few months ago, about a 
force-field for armored personnel carriers.  Not quite as sci-fi 
as it sounds, they use a thinner outer armour with a small gap 
to the inner plating.  The outer armour is then "electrically 
charged" so that any bullet penetrating the outer armour gets 
vaporised as soon as it completes the circuit between the two.
  
No details on where they got the power from, but I believe 360 
volts worth of optimas can generate a reasonable amount of 
plasma? :)
