David Nyman gave a much more rigorous definition of primitive materialism in another thread (he calls it "primordial"). ISTM that what is supposed to be "primordial" about a specific set of entities and their relations is precisely that they *exclusively* underlie (or more correctly, comprise) everything that is "really real". So the hierarchical structure of everything we observe thereafter - be it physical, chemical, biological, physiological, etc. - would be deemed to be underpinned, exclusively and exhaustively, by such a primordial substratum.

I would use the greek term for substratum (hypostase) though, as it is not a substance in the sense of stuffy thing. With comp we can use the numbers as (non stuffy) primitive terms, and clearly no physical objects will ever be said of being "made of numbers" (like stuffy things are made of other stuffy things). It is really more being *dreamed by numbers*, with the correct relative statistics. The object "in your dream" are not stuffy.

In fact I use primitive simply for the assumed object through the TOE atomic terms.

I don't need a precise definition, so I let open if, in arithmetic, only 0 is primitive, or if we accept as primitive also s(0), s(s(0)), etc. Usually I take them all as primitive (but non stuffy) objects.

All what is asked to 0, s(0), s(s(0)), ... is the obedience to logic and the axioms:

0 ≠ s(x)
s(x) = s(y) -> x = y
x = 0 v Ey(x = s(y))
x+0 = x
x+s(y) = s(x+y)
x*0=0
x*s(y)=(x*y)+x

Does everyone understand them?
