Ah, now something comes back to me. Is it just a question of whether the duplicates are the same "I" as the original? This is irrelevant to the argument of step 3, because that's defined using the diaries each person is supposed carry, and make notes of their experiences in. Whether they argue about who is the real successor to the original doesn't come into it, as far as I remember.
