Pitch? Do you mean the number of rows on each comb? I've got two rows on
each comb, and again.... still not obvious to me how it works. 

It's easier if I just use one comb and hook the lock by the thel and pull
the tog out, but theoretically these combs are supposed to work hand held in
pairs.

By the way, are the rows supposed to alternate spacing with each other, or
line up? I've seen both.

Mine line up like the second example. They're home-made by an experimental
archaeologist
