I can sell dish towels locally at a consignment shop. Finding a place to sell handwoven clothing, supposing I was adept at designing and sewing such (I'm not) is a whole 'nuther story.

There's nothing 'unreal' about weaving towels. They're a GREAT way to try out a new loom and new weave structures (my first warp on the Schacht was for summer & winter, which I had never done, dishtowels). You can put as long a warp on for towels as for anything else--two 21.5 yard warps in October last year for me, for example. They use less material per finished item, so they don't cost as much to weave. The finishing is easy, even if you handhem like I do. And they make fabulous gifts.

But the #1 reason why I weave lots of towels is that I LOVE using them! I have no store-bought dish towels anymore excpet a couple old ratty ones that are used to mop up spills that might stain (and they're kept on TOP of the pile of handwoven towels so that family members won't grab the good ones by accident :)

I've also woven cloth yardage, and it's certainly satisfying. But with my collection of 8/2 cotton, the resulting cloth is a little heavy, and I'm not much of a sewer and my machine is old (doesn't reverse anymore, bother!) and there's not too many patterns suitable for handwoven cloth and I don't know how long that yardage will sit there before someone sews it up. I guess I keep hoping the good sewing fairy will come along and make it up for me :)

I'm hoping to be able to buy some new yarns this year, in sizes smaller than 8/2, but I'm still working on a mill end pack I bought in about 1990, and don't have a lot of shelving for holding more cones. So, dish towels are still my personal choice for using up 8/2 cotton.

But I have another handspun handwoven shawl percolating in the back of my head, along with a handspun handknit shawl that would 'echo' the woven one's weave structure, just for the fun of it.

Hmmmm, why don't people use their looms to weave 'real' yarn like handspun more often? <g>
