My last project on the Schacht was a Christmas table runner and napkins of cottolin, and one of the wefts was 20/2 linen leftover from a project long, long ago and far, far away.

After I remembered to try dampening the weft, it worked fine, but before that I was having frustrating problems with it being wirey (or should that be wiry--neither look right! :)

So I got out one of the fly shuttles, wound a pirn, and gave that a try.

I followed the instructions as carefully as I could, but the yarn kept catching on itself rather than unwinding smoothly. I won't mention the difficulties of throwing and catching a fly shuttle <ouch!>

So I wound another pirn. More tension, more care. Still problems. And another. At that point I remembered dampening the weft and went back to a standard side-delivery shuttle.

If anyone has any tips for winding pirns they'd like to share, that don't duplicate the standard instructions, I'm all eyes!
