Not knowing your shuttles, I won't comment there, but 20/2 linen is fairly
coarse and would tend to be wiry when working with it.
To get the edges to turn nicely, you really need to use a good standard wood
or metal temple. This will allow you to let the yarn "tug" slightly at the
selvedges and not produce loops. Also, don't bubble or even angle the weft -
let it cross the weft in a straight line with only a slight angle. Some of
the edge loops that happen weaving with linen weft are NOT because the
material wasn't dampened, but because the weft was entered with too much
"play" in it and the excess is simply squeezed out the side.
I've never wound pirns - have managed to avoid it so far - but I do know
that they require more care in winding to produce good results and that they
require practice and a different feel for filling. If your yarn is hairy in
any way, the way the yarn pulls off the pirn will be influenced toward
stickiness.
