But I am pretty sure the opening of Haydn's Creation would ask for muted
horn as well (are there horns in the opening), as it does so even for the
clarinets - how do you mute a clarinet.

But unfortunately I don't know the answer - I am not a wind player. For us
violins it's easy, just put a little device on your bridge. Even a paper
clip will do in emergencies.
