This sounds to me as though you have some other trouble with your OS X installation that needs to be solved.
I'm really not sure what those could be. I run Cocktail regularly to repair permissions, run cron scripts, etc., and none of my disk maintenance tools detect anything in need of fixing. I recently did a completely clean reinstall of Panther. I don't use any third-party hacks -- with the exception of Cocktail, to enable both scroll arrows at both ends of scrollbars (not really a third-party hack since it's an undocumented feature of the OS itself) and iKey. I don't run Classic when I run Finale 2004. I usually don't do heavy lifting in other apps while Finale is running, although I do need to have Mail and Safari open the background while I work. It's true that I have an "unsupported" machine for 10.3, but XPostFacto enables Panther on this box without a hitch. I don't think it's possible that the Finale app itself is corrupted, since the two updates released by Coda are in fact full versions of the application itself.
I suppose it's possible that something has gone wrong with my Finale preferences and that is causing the app to crash, but that seems unlikely to me. Nevertheless, I will try resetting my preferences.
But again, Finale is the *only* OS X application that ever crashes on me.
