For articulated voices (which I tend to write more than sustained legato voices) I liked John Howell's idea of assigning them to a clarinet patch. Most of the "oohs" and "aahs" I hear in MIDI voices are too washy and have attacks that are too slow to allow me to hear what I need.
Whether you will agree or not... well, I have to go with David's advice and try them out first.
