Well played! :) This requires "Avoid Margin Collision" -- just mentioning because I'm sure many folks other than David Fenton had forgotten its virtues. So think about something long enough, and reasonably good solutions present themselves. This is an excellent solution, far better than using alternate parts and fake barlines. In fact, now that you've got me on that track, I see that you don't even need for the first system and solos to be connected in order to use this solution -- just follow your recommendation and include everything that starts with the solos. After optimizing, drag the full score area to the left and drag the solo optimized lines up into place (though I don't think with the time constraints that I can retrofit this solution onto the existing score; one mistake and everything explodes, since this is only on page 4 of 28). None of these solutions will yet play back; for that we'll have to wait for staggered barlines and independent layout of any linear elements on a page (which this solution comes closest to, and would probably be solved in this case with staggered barlines).
