First, you should take all the belts off and see if it still vibrates. I may just be a bad fan or other belt driven accessory. The other thing that you should check for is any place the engine and trans may be touching the body or frame, such as motor mounts, or exhaust. It's natural for an engine to vibrate some, it's the job of the mounts to isolate that vibration. If you've ever taken a ride in someone's car that has solid motor mounts, you'd know what I mean.

Subject: [FGF] General vibration and buzz

First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List

My FB with the 400 motor brings a lot of vibration and buzz through the seats, steering wheel, gear shifter, etc. It's nearly comparable to a motorcycle. This buzz is starting to affect the nerves in my lower back, giving me a prickling sensation when I drive.

The car came with cheapo "Racing" bucket seats, $129 at Pep Boys. I've modified the driver's seat with a gel pad, but the buzz is still too intense.

A new pair of "real" Firebird seats is $1359 at The Paddock. This is out of my price range, but would "real" seats make a difference in reducing vibration?

Anyone else have a lot of vibration in their car? Is there perhaps a way to rubber-mount the motor or something like this? I'm a little concerned that the level of vibration could even knock something loose over time, so I'm careful to make sure that bolts are tight on a regular basis.

I've been relying on this list a great deal. There's no one in my neck of the woods who understands this car, not even the mechanics I've worked with over the plast year. All your comments are gratefully received.

Thanks,

Dan O'Brien
