Cracked flex plates sound just like rod knock too. I was getting ready to pull a friends engine out and when I went to unbolt the torque converter I saw the crack on the flex plate. Swapped it out and good bye knock.

ps. I bet the nice smokey aroma of the cooking 2x4 adds to the character of the car

A friend bought a car that had a "con rod knock" ,so he got it really cheap. Fixed the "knock" by wedging a 2x4 between the frame and the loose exhaust.
